Nicotine Cessation Implementation

Through June 30, 2026, Oregon pharmacy technicians can receive free access to this course provided by the Oregon Health Authority. To receive free access, email your OR license # and employer to PharmacyCE@oregonstate.edu.

In Oregon, more than 6 out of 10 people who smoke cigarettes want to quit. Most people who smoke have attempted to quit in the past year. Smoking is the leading cause of death and disease in Oregon, killing 8,000 people every year.

The course is uniquely designed to educate the Oregon pharmacy technicians on assisting pharmacists to assess and prescribe nicotine cessation medications

The Oregon Health Authority-Public Health Division (OHA-PHD) and the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Section (HPCDP) collaborated with the Oregon State University of Pharmacy to train pharmacists and technicians to treat nicotine addiction.

Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Information:

This program has been planned and implemented in accordance with the policies of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education through the sponsorship of OSU College of Pharmacy. The OSU College of Pharmacy is approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Upon completion of this activity, participants will receive a Statement of Completion, and a Statement of Credit shall be uploaded to CPE Monitor. Completion requires 1) Registration for the course 2) Completion of all modules 3) Passing a final exam with 80% or higher and 4) Completion of the program evaluation.

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1) Discuss the epidemiology and burden of tobacco and nicotine use
2) Describe the health benefits of quitting tobacco
3) List the different FDA approved medications to help with nicotine cessation
4) Discuss the steps for a pharmacist-provided nicotine cessation visit and pharmacy workflow
5) List and discuss five resources recommended for assisting Oregon patients attempting to quit smoking
